The Olympics is the biggest sporting event in the world. Many countries participate in both the summer and winter games. The event is so big that it can bring an incredible amount of revenue to which ever country host it which is why world leaders make fools out of themselves trying to bid for the world games. Sometimes the Olympics make some questionable changes and decisions. I mean they did try to make 'Bridge' an official event, I mean Bridge the card game. So now the International Amateur Boxing Association is facing charges of sexism by announcing that female boxers may have to box in skirts at the 2012 Games.
"They are boxers and they want to wear boxing kit. Some of the female boxers would possibly say, 'I'll wear what they tell me to wear if they are the rules. But most would say, 'We have earned the right to be boxers and we want to go as boxers, not female boxers", said British podium coach Dave Alloway.
British Lightweight Champion Natasha Jonas said, "There should be a choice -- no one should be forced to do anything. In other sports like (soccer) and cricket, you aren't forced to wear skirts. So I don't see why boxing should have to. For me, it doesn't seem practical, I know there are girls in IABA who wear skirts all the time. But psychologically, I don't feel comfortable wearing one."
IABA has suggested that wearing skirts would help women stand out from the men. Female boxers from Poland and Romania donned skirts at last month's European Championships in the Netherlands.
So the amateur boxing association wants the female boxers to fight in skirts? Why do I think this Association is being run by a bunch of old men? Seriously? Skirts? You want them to fight in skirts? What else, should they be wearing lipstick? Instead of boxing gloves give them pom poms, oh and high heels. You have got to be kidding me!
That podium coach is all over the place isn't he? Alloway also said, "These girls can be flagbearers. If they get a gold medal, they will be superstars--to become the first women to win gold at an Olympics can make them history makers."
Flagbearers? Don't you mean ringcard girls because that's what they'll look like wearing skirts. I love when the IABA suggest that wearing skirts can help the female boxers stand out from the men. Incredible! You're either saying the women look incredibly masculine or the men look feminine.
Sebastien Gillot, communications director for IABA, tried to take some of the heat off by saying, "Under no circumstances will wearing skirts be compulsory for female boxers next summer. The organization is simply sounding out opinion."
Well at least Sebastien is trying to explain the situation, yeah trying and failing. "Sounding out opinion"? Who's opinion Larry Flynt's...allegedly! Skirts are not the proper uniform in boxing, you can't have you're female athletes boxing in skirts, if you do you'll just make a joke out of the event.
At least they got me to watch, normally I don't watch the Olympics I mean I'm a sports fan but it's sort of tough watching live events at 2:00am. Just when I think I've seen it all in sports I'm constantly surprised. Why don't they just come out and say 'they're women so they should be in skirts'. Is it 2011 or 1911?
