Chase Silseth Opens Up About Confidence Heading Into Season With Angels
USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Angels entered the offseason looking to make significant upgrades to their starting rotation. However, as we are now into the first few games of Spring Training, the Halos have yet to make any major additions.

For now, they will be banking on their arms improving from a year ago. The front office did add some depth to the mix, but they have multiple players who will be looking to take that next step.

One of those is right-hander Chase Silseth, who will likely be competing for one of the backend rotation spots. Silseth looked decent last season before getting stuck in the head with a baseball during a freak injury. He missed most of the last part of the season but did return for one start before the year ended.

He pitched four innings against the Oakland A's in his return, allowing one run on two hits and he struck out three batters. Silseth spoke about his confidence entering the new season following his strong performance at the end of the year.

“That was a big, big, big, big confidence for me,” Silseth said. “When you pitch against one good team, you build confidence for the next good team. And I showed I could do it when I just stayed within myself, not trying to blow it out. My stuff is good enough to get people out in the zone. Just have to get ahead in the count to get to all my nasty stuff.”

Silseth pitched in four games last year, posting an ERA of 8.10 during that time. He will be looked at to provide some needed pitching depth to this team, and if he can perform strongly during the spring, likely will earn a spot.

He is still only 23 years old, so there is plenty of time for his game to continue growing. The Halos are banking on his continued development, and he will be looking to show he belongs at the big league level.
