The era of Pete Carroll with the Seattle Seahawks has come to an end, after 14 stellar seasons. The 72-year-old parted ways with the franchise last Wednesday, as the franchise switched his position from the head coach to an advisor role. Among the many, who regarded Carroll’s departure as a shock, one more name has been added — Richard Sherman.

After being with the Seahawks since 2010, Carroll was known to be the oldest head coach in the league. He was well-recognized for his easygoing and rumination persona, which also made him a universally recognized emblem of sports, for the Pacific Northwest in the 21st century. And with his departure, it’s truly a sad moment for the franchise, given his 170-120-1 NFL coaching record.

The former Seattle cornerback, who played under Carroll in the “Legion of Boom” defense from 2011 to 2017 was truly shocked by the franchise’s decision to let go of the legendary head coach. Richard Sherman said:

It's been a pretty stable franchise throughout his [Pete Carroll] entire career there and so, for them to move on from him, without any obvious successor or any really awful season or anything like that is kind of surprising . Richard Sherman on UNDISPUTED

He continued:

It seems like the ownership wanted to move in that direction. He was seemed caught off guard…it's a really sad day for the city of Seattle. It's the sad day for the NFL for, you know, one of the legends of the game. Richard Sherman added

Sherman also mentioned the departure of head coach Bill Belichick from the New England Patriots after 23 legendary years. He also highlighted how Carroll has changed the culture of the team, as well as the city, of Seattle.

When Carroll joined the franchise, the Seahawks were not known for having too big an NFL market and a limited fan base. But now, after him, “people think about it [Seattle] as a destination.”

Pete Carroll leaves behind a remarkable legacy with the Seahawks

Head coach Carroll’s legacy in the Seattle Seahawks is known to everyone. He coached the team to their only but first Super Bowl victory, along with bringing nine playoff appearances in the last 12 years.

When he created the “Legion of Loom,” he drafted many future stars into the team, such as Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner, Richard Sherman, K.J. Wright, and Kam Chancellor . As he groomed these players, he built the franchise as an NFL powerhouse.

Carroll made the players stars and he cared for them from the bottom of his heart. Whether it be Wilson or Sherman, all the Seattle players who have played for Carroll are truly heartbroken and shocked by the franchise’s decision.
