Tennessee Titans might draft position fans would hate according to latest from ESPN NFL Draft analyst
Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

The Tennessee Titans still desperately need to fix the offensive line. Titans general manager Ran Carthon has already brought in a new center (Lloyd Cushenberry) and a guard (Saahdiq Charles) to help the interior, but the offensive tackle position is an absolute mess. However, based on the latest from a top ESPN NFL Draft analyst and a handful Titans media members we may need to prepare ourselves for the Titans go a different direction in round one of the 2024 NFL Draft.

According to Matt Miller's latest Top 50 Big Board, Dallas Turner, EDGE Alabama is his seventh overall prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft class. Full piece can be found via the post below. And while Miller's big board is just one data point, all the latest big boards and mock draft data have started trending towards Joe Alt (OT, Notre Dame) coming off the board just before the Titans pick.

That may mean we see the Titans select an edge defender instead of offensive tackle.

How Edge Defender at Pick 7 Might Happen

If the clear best offensive tackle does come off the board before the Titans pick that likely means one of the quarterbacks, wide receivers, or Dallas Turner has fallen to them at pick seven. Based on what A to Z Sports is hearing the Titans are still very much all-in on Will Levis, so there's no way the team would select a quarterback. They just spent a huge amount to bring in Calvin Ridley, and could be expecting great things from Treylon Burks as the team's third receiver, so WR might not happen either.

That would make Dallas Turner the ideal selection for the Titans at pick seven, even if a majority of fans don't believe it's the greatest need. A to Z Sports' own Buck Reising posted this week about the inevitable disappointment he (and many others) would feel if the Titans take an edge at pick seven. But if the pick is indeed Dallas Turner, that wouldn't be a bad thing at all. In fact, there's an argument that edge defender may be the best move.

Why Edge Defender Makes Sense for Titans

As I talked about last week, Dallas Turner looks like one of the best edge defender prospects ever. He's a 99th percentile athlete whose closest physical comp is Von Miller based on his NFL Combine testing. He posted a pass rush pressure rate near 20% last fall, good for second among all power conference edge defenders in the class (behind only Laiatu Latu, UCLA). And he just turned 21 in February with plenty of room to continue developing.

The Titans return just two proven edge defenders since they let Denico Autry leave in free agency (Harold Landry & Arden Key remain). Only one other edge defender for the Titans logged even one sack last year. The offensive line is still a huge issue, but the edge group clearly is too.

What might make fans especially angry is if Joe Alt is still on the board and the Titans go with Dallas Turner anyway. Why would they do that? The offensive tackle class is legitimately ten players deep with players who could start immediately. There should be a talented offensive tackle available at pick 38 when the Titans come back on the clock in round two.

The Titans still very well could select an offensive tackle (that they sorely need) at pick seven, but there are many other possibilities that Titans fans may have to accept. And if the pick ends up being Dallas Turner, just know the Titans could be getting a defensive rookie of the year candidate.
